The development of transport in the middle of the 19th century led to the development of tourism and the expansion of contacts between people living in different parts of the world. The invention of photography made it possible to record sights and unknown places around the world. Photographic prints became a sought-after visual keepsake. The lecture will show images taken by nineteenth century travel photographers using techniques from the first daguerreotypes to colour images in ‘natural’ colours. Travel photography has evolved into a highly professional business. A special place will be given to the story of Japanese photography, whose masters coloured black and white prints by hand. A very interesting and important part in capturing the world around us was stereophotography, the role of which will also be discussed at the lecture. The lecture is illustrated with rich visual material.
