Lecture

The lecture is devoted to one of the trends in photography that developed worldwide from the 1890s to the 1930s.
Photography of the late 19th century, due to its relatively short existence compared to other visual technologies, lacked its own cultural memory, which meant that the concept of photographic art had to be developed practically from scratch. To fill this cultural vacuum, the easiest way for photographers to borrow aesthetic principles from traditional visual practices, primarily from painting and drawing, was initially proposed. In the late 19th century, such artistic styles were Impressionism and Symbolism, so Pictorialism developed under the influence of these very trends in traditional art.
The lecture examines the development of Russian Pictorialism in the context of world photography from the first works of A. Mazurin, A. Trapani, A. Greenberg to the artistic experiments of A. Rodchenko.
The lecture is illustrated with rich visual material, and after the lecture the audience will be able to see unique author’s works by Pictorialist photographers as part of the exhibition ‘Pictorial Photography’.
