‘Earth’ is one of the best films by Dovzhenko, who created a poetic image of mother Earth. A film poem about the bloody meat grinder of Stalin’s collectivisation, shelved for decades by the censorship of totalitarianism. A document of a horrifying era of violent social change.
The film was criticised in the Soviet press for its naturalism (female nudity, pagan cult of nature), but abroad it was acclaimed as one of the most poetic in world cinema. The film was included in the competition programme of the 1st International Venice Film Festival (1932). In 1958 at the World Exhibition in Brussels ‘Earth’ was included in the top ten films in the history of cinema. In 2015, the film was included in the UNESCO list of masterpieces of world cinema.
A film created by Jean-Luc Godard’s favourite director, frequently quoted by world cinema. A visual statement about life and death, created by the remarkable cameraman and photographer Daniil Demutsky.
A film about the elements, calling for a conversation.
The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film with Anton Mazurov, film historian, film curator and lecturer at the Higher School of Economics.
The ticket price for the film screening also includes a ticket to the exhibition ‘Alphabet. Soviet Photography of the 1920s-1930s’.
