The exhibition "Japan. Different World" at the Béton Center of Visual Culture presents rare Japanese photographs with painted elements.

Color is important

The exhibition "Japan. Another World" exhibition at the Béton Center of Visual Culture presents rare Japanese photographs with painted elements. They were taken at the end of the 19th century, when the country opened its doors to tourists.

- The pictures were black and white. And to make them more expressive, they were colored, - Alexei Loginov, curator of the exhibition, tells Metro.

This was done by specialists in the field of prints. The finest painting made the photo not only more presentable, but also helped to convey the life of Japan, which previously no one knew about. For example, we see a pink sakura tree. Tourists have only heard about this tree, but did not realize how beautiful it is when it blooms. Traditional costumes, their pattern and color of fabrics, characteristic only for this country, also arouse interest.

The plot is varied

- Some scenes were filmed in the pavilion. There are the most common plots: geishas, samurai, sakura, tea ceremony, - says Alexey Loginov.

Outside the studio they also took pictures. They captured landscapes, rice harvesting and trading shops. These pictures were also colored.

- Those elements that represented the country were shown in color. Today we pick up the phone and say, "I was there." In the past, it was more complicated.
