Almond Chu

Almond Chu (1962, Hong Kong) is a photographer originally from Hong Kong. In his youth he moved to Tokyo to study at the Tokyo College of Photography. He returned to his hometown where he opened his own studio in 1993. In the same year Almond Chu was awarded the Asian Culture Council’s Young Photographer Award, after which he trained in New York. In demand by collectors and galleries around the world, the photographer is best known today for his conceptual series of large format works created using digital technology. One such series, titled Parade (2004 – 2015), features large-scale images of imaginary parades. The masses of people are composed of multiple repetitions of the author’s own image. In exploring the phenomenon of parades, Almond Chu places the action in places laden with social and historical meanings, such as government offices or corporate buildings like the Apple shop.
